Summer Reads…for Educators

It’s only the end of April, but I’m building up my pile of books to read this summer. This will be one interesting summer because as of now, I don’t know what or where I will be teaching in September.  I might be a school librarian (I hope), or I might have to go back into the classroom. Either way, I will be prepared. Here is what I will read…this list will grow as we near the end (demise?) of this school year:

1.  The Culture of Collaboration by Evan Rosen.  Here, Rosen asserts that “…information workers need to learn how to come together on projects spontaneously in real time, instead of handling assignments alone and passing them down the line.”  As educators, I consider all of us as information workers because we live, breathe, and teach in the Information Age.

2.  Guided Inquiry by Carol Kuhlthau.  I read this book last year and just flipped. I had to download it on my iPad. If you haven’t read it yet, you better stop what you are doing and read it. This book is worth rereading this summer.

3.  An Ethic of Excellence: Building a Culture of Craftsmanship with Students by Ron Berger.  Berger is a veteran classroom teachers who offers advice (and not just rhetoric) on excellence in the school and in the classroom. I’ve been wanting to reading this for a while now.

4. 21st Century Skills: Learning for Life in Our Times by Bernie Trilling and Charles Fadel. This is another book I read a couple years ago, and was ranting about it for a while. Yep, it’s worth another good rereading.

Of course, I have some recreational titles on my growing list ( Anne Rice, Angie Sage, Seth Grahame-Smith, William Davis, and others).
